Based upon laws found in the Civil Practices and Remedies Code, nuisance abatement is designed to eliminate environments that contribute to crime. Locations that have a high volume of criminal activities, including drug use and sales, alcohol violations, gambling, gang activity, and other offenses, are targeted with these laws to close them down. On many occasions, these properties are owned by absentee landlords who are unaware of the activities, and when informed of them and the nuisance abatement process, they close the properties themselves, thus ending the problems there.
