Selective Traffic Enforcement Program

Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP)

The Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) is an enforcement effort targeting three driving behaviors that contribute greatly to the numbers and severity of traffic crashes:

  • Speeding,
  • Occupant restraint
  • Driving while intoxicated

Assigned Overtime Duty

Officers are assigned overtime duty to specifically target these kinds of violations in the days surrounding major holidays when so many more motorists are on the road. By the end of 2010, STEP had helped contribute to a reduction in the accident rate of over 26% since January of 2005.
